Bill Ahlstrom, who served as special assistant to Presidents Joseph Duffey and Elliott Milstein, has left AU, as have Director of Student Activities Larry Williams, Director of Student Services Darion Carney and Associate Dean of Students Stacey Morgan-Foster.
New President Benjamin Ladner's right-hand man will be Leonard L. Haynes III, assistant secretary for post-secondary education for the U.S. Department of Education under the Bush Administration.
Haynes arrives at AU from the University of Maryland College Park, where he was a visiting scholar in educational policy for the 1994 spring semester. He was also a senior consultant for the National Education Goals Panel in Washington, and a consultant to the German/U.S. Fulbright Commission in Bonn, Germany.
Four administrators under Dean of Students John Martone have permanently taken on the additional responsibilities of those who left this year. Anne Steen, who was director of residential life and housing services, is now executive director of campus life. She will oversee Kay Chapel, Residential Life and Housing Services, and Student Activities.
Williams, who arrived at AU two years ago to head the Office of Student Activities, is leaving to take the position of associate dean of students at Connecticut's University of Hartford. Orientation Coordinator Todd Shaver is performing Williams's tasks until an interim replacement can be found.
Karen Robinson, coordinator of the center for student volunteerism and community service, also left the university at the end of last year to take a position with Amnesty International. She was also adviser to student government and media, a position recently filled by Bob Nedwich from George Mason University.
Morgan-Foster left AU to take the position of vice president for student affairs at San Jose State University. Faith Leonard, associate director of the Center for Psychological and Learning Services, will be handling Morgan-Foster's responsibilities in addition to her CPLS work. She will also be in charge of the new service-learning program that gives students an extra credit for taking a class that incorporates service, as well as conduct council. Her new title is associate dean for academic support services.
Gary Wright will be in charge of the new Sexual Minorities Resource Center and off-campus housing, and he will continue running international and intercultural student affairs.
Theresa Dinuzzo, former director of CPLS, now also oversees the Student Health Center.
Carney, former director of student services, had her job eliminated in the restructuring.
