In the summer of 1974, Sports Illustrated’s Rick Telander spent his time at the fabled Rucker Park in New York City, following along and taking notes as hundreds of people came in to compete in the summer leagues and tournaments, or just play pickup basketball at the park. He titled his book about these basketball courts “Heaven is a Playground,” a reference to a quote by English author G.K. Chesterton, who concluded that “the true object of all human life is play. Earth is a task garden; heaven is a playground.”

The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law and Jewish On Campus filed a complaint Wednesday with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights against American University, asking OCR to formally investigate alleged violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This follows Jewish On Campus’s complaint against — and subsequent OCR investigation into — Wellesley College in November 2023, making this the second OCR complaint that the organization has filed since Oct. 7.

The responsibility of a university includes ensuring the safety and protection of its students. However, marginalized populations at American University are continuously let down by an administration that places its own comfort and discretion over issues of discrimination. AU’s Discrimination and Non-Title IX Sexual Misconduct Policy sidesteps this critical role of safety and protection in its lack of procedures that meaningfully prioritize marginalized students’ experiences of discrimination.
