The Eagle recognizes Black History Month with opinion, sports and news articles

The DEI group continues to work with Eagle departments to diversify this semester’s coverage

At a recent meeting of the paper’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion group, Editor-in-Chief Sophie Austin spoke about some of The Eagle’s recent and planned coverage focusing on diversity.

On Thursday, The Eagle published a Q&A with former Managing Editor of Opinion Nickolaus Mack, whose criticism of American University’s decision to hold its 2018 Founders Ball at the National Museum of African American History and Culture led AU to study its ties to slavery.

Officially called the American University Working Group on the Influence of Slavery, the group was revived recently –– with a broader focus –– according to University officials, which The Eagle reported Thursday.

An article about Black, history-making and trailblazing AU community members was published Friday, and a profile of AU basketball player Kayla Henning, a freshman activist, was published Tuesday.

Such coverage throughout February highlights how various sections of The Eagle worked with the DEI group to recognize Black History Month.

El Águila, The Eagle’s new Spanish section that will be published in the form of a magazine later this spring, saw its second article published this week.

New and some returning Eagle staffers attended a journalism ethics and communication law workshop hosted by School of Communication professor John Watson on Tuesday. The DEI group is also planning a reporting on race workshop to be held soon.

DEI members and the Copy department are also in the process of reviewing The Eagle’s Style Sheet for any conventions that may perpetuate biases or prevent the paper from reporting on disabilities in an accurate and respectful way.

DEI staffers also spoke about upcoming feature articles and multimedia projects that will ensure The Eagle’s coverage remains diverse, equitable and inclusive for the remainder of the semester and beyond.
