Ladner fires up flames of AU tradition

"Harvard on the Potomac" is no longer as new President Benjamin Ladner stepped into the AU public eye Wednesday at opening convocation. In his first major address to students, faculty and staff, Ladner saluted AU's past while speaking out against trying to imitate other universities.

Dr. Benjamin Ladner was sitting in Seattle one evening on a routine business trip when an official from the New York-based search firm that helped AU find candidates called to see if he would be interested in the presidency of AU. Six weeks later, he had the job.

Permits now only obstacle to construction at Spring Valley Center

Construction is still on hold at the recently-purchased Spring Valley Center, new home to the Washington College of Law, and will not begin until construction permits are obtained. "The city provides no specific calendar as to when the permit will be released," said Andrew Popper, WCL deputy dean of space and planning.

Renovating Anderson: Phase one

Candidates debate issues

The biggest issue in the upcoming city council election is D.C.'s financial crisis, candidates for Ward 3 council member and audience members said at a candidates' forum Thursday night. The forum, which was held at McLean Gardens condominiums, was one of several which have been held in the past several weeks to allow the public to ask questions to the four candidates running for Ward 3 council member, Democratic incumbent Jim Nathanson, Democratic challengers Kathy Patterson and James Montgomery, and Republican challenger Philip Murphy.

Bill Ahlstrom, who served as special assistant to Presidents Joseph Duffey and Elliott Milstein, has left AU, as have Director of Student Activities Larry Williams, Director of Student Services Darion Carney and Associate Dean of Students Stacey Morgan-Foster.

Cut free by AU, nationals, ZBT appeals decision

AU severed its affiliation with Zeta Beta Tau fraternity's Beta Psi chapter on June 30 for what Dean of Students John Martone called "flagrant and serious violations of University policies." ZBT national followed suit August 10 by cutting off ties with the AU chapter.

One Card unifies meal plan, hall access and Bender library use

AU is going high-tech. Beginning this semester, the university is implementing a new, state-of-the-art ID card system. The "One Card" is designed to be used for a variety of services on campus and has reduced the cost and hassle of student ID cards, according to Tom Taylor, manager of security systems.



 Hosts Sara Winick and Sydney Hsu introduce themselves and talk about their favorite TV shows. This episode includes fun facts, recommendations and personal connections.
